SANDBLASTING

Time takes its toll on everything. Everything wears out. Take buildings, for instance. Under the weather, they are affected by the sun's ultraviolet light, the rain's acidity and general dirtiness, and the temperature extremes of summer and winter. Unless the outer surface is brick, stone, glass or another "naked" surface, it has paint or another similar coating to protect it. And since this paint lives under the same physical laws of entropy, it must be refreshed when it begins to look tired. Refreshing these outer surfaces is a two-step process. The first step is to prepare the surface, and the second is to apply the coating. The coatings have to be suited to the Texas environment. Likewise, sandblasting will provide the proper surface preparation.

Homeowners on a tight budget may prefer to climb a ladder to scrape peeling paint and wash off loose dirt. But for a commercial building of any size, hand preparation is not a sensible option. The most sensible solution is generically referred to as sandblasting. The sandblasting process consists of aiming a high-pressure stream of fine particles at the surface to be cleaned or etched. Since the use of sand has been found to cause the lung disease silicosis, it is not used as commonly now as when the term sandblasting came into use.

There are many other materials that are now used instead. These materials include steel grit, copper slag, walnut shells, powdered abrasives, and even bits of coconut shell. One common method of cleaning metal and concrete surfaces is shot blasting. In this method, the shot is mixed with water as it is blasted at the surface. The material is recaptured so that the shot can be separated from the water and debris to be reused. Another innovative material is dry ice. When dry ice is used, there is no need to be concerned with recapturing the blasting material because it just evaporates into the atmosphere. Sandblasting can be used not only to prepare a surface for painting but also as a means of cleaning a "naked" surface that will never be coated.

If the cleaned building is a painted building, the time has come to coat the surface. The first coat may not necessarily be paint. There are many types of undercoating that may be needed to further prepare the surface. If the surface is pitted or cracked, fillers can return the surface to its original smoothness or planned texture. Another undercoating that will further prepare the surface is in the primer category. Primer prepares the surface to receive the paint covering. Then, when the surface is properly prepared, the actual painting can take place.

Maintaining the outer surfaces of our structures, whether it is a cozy bungalow or a towering skyscraper, is vitally important. The first result of neglect is a decline in the appearance. If the outward appearance of the structure is allowed to decline further, the building will lose monetary value. But the paint or other coating serves an even more important purpose. If neglected long enough, the physical structure will begin to deteriorate.

Going away for the summer is such a nice thing to experience and even better if there are no set rules to follow, where you have to go and what time you need to be there; the clock stops ticking. Those are the best kind of trips, it is not that the whole point of going on a vacation to get away from it all or all of it;

waking up and watching the sun rise at your will or sleeping in till noon if you so desire. Site seeing is of course, a very important thing to do on your holiday or trip. Maybe going shopping or to museums and viewing all of the art and sculptures which is on the rise; even the signage is unique it is formed from sandblast resist and a technique called sandblast stencil where they design actual artistic sign through sandblasting. Taking a stone and creating a 3D piece of artwork and using for either advertisements for large events or businesses or just beautiful work to admire.

Visiting unique places when away is the best; walking into the unique museums and taking the time to appreciate the true art and talent that people have in them which are just amazing. So many people have hidden talents that they do not even know that they have and sometimes it just accidentally surfaces; like painters whether it is water colors or a beautiful oil painting the life just come right through the canvas.

Being able to have the opportunity to share these arts are a gift to all of us, even driving down the street you do not realize what goes into the structures that are in front of a business which would generally be considered modern art which would consist of possibly a steel structure that is beautifully created and shaped in its own uniqueness and the personality of the artist as well.

You can think along the same line with the stone structures some which are actually carved by hand or mechanically cut out; then even using the process mentioned above is absolutely wonderful especially with the ability to have a 3D appearance to it and captures attention of anyone driving by. To capture ones attention of someone and have them turn their head twice is part of the entire plan; that is what the artist planned from the beginning; not just create something that someone wants to look at, but something that is out of the ordinary and will do some head turning, getting those 2nd and 3rd glances.

Each artist has their own goal with their finish work and the desire that they are after as well; we all think that they are looking for the awe and beautiful recognition but they are not, many times it is the unique response that they are seeking and is so rewarding to them when they witness the true results come out when stepping back and watching the crowd do exactly what they were hoping for; which sometimes is watching the admire scratch their head trying to figure it out, the artist succeeded.
